Description:
A collection of Saint-Saens' orchestral works conducted by Merkle. This collection includes "Dances and Ballet Music" with the Hague Residential Orchestra. In his youth, Saint-Saens was a supporter of such progressive figures as Wagner and Liszt, but in his later years of maturity, he showed a more conservative stance, preferring the music of Lully, Rameau, and other predecessors of the French Baroque. He also became interested in the Tudor dynasty and medieval French monarchs, and began writing music based on these subjects. The music on this album is based on the stories and forms of the past that Saint-Saens explored, but orchestrated with the flamboyance that was typical of him. The ballet music from the opera "Etienne Marcel," praised by Gounod, is modeled on baroque dance forms, while the ballet music from the opera "Henry VIII" includes music for the dignified scenes and ballets representing various countries and peoples. The music from "Pallusatis," first performed in 1902 to great acclaim at the time, includes four pieces from the "Airs de ballet" using the ancient instrument "crotales-finger cymbals. Also included are two adrenaline-filled pieces from "Samson and Delilah," Saint-Saens' most famous stage work, the opera "Bacchanal" and "Dance of the Dragon Priest.
