In February 1831, Rossini was in Madrid. The reason was to plead with the Spanish royal family to protect his interests, as his wife, Isabella Colbran, had previously loaned him a large sum of money, and the July Revolution had left them bankrupt. When Manuel Fernández Barrera, the deputy bishop of Madrid, asked Rossini to write a piece for him, Rossini was too busy to respond with a simple dedication, but Barrera asked him to write "Stabat Mater" for him. Rossini, who was in poor health, tried to renege on his promise, but it was impossible. When the deadline approached, he asked his friend Tadolini for help, and the two collaborated to complete the complete work, which he dedicated to Barrera. They completed the complete work together and presented it to Barrera. At the time of the dedication, Rossini asked Barella not to publish the score and to keep it out of the public domain, but Barella did not keep his promise. (the original six songs plus the four songs written later).However, conductor Fogliani attempted to perform the work in the state of the version dedicated to Barrera, and succeeded in restoring it in its complete form by orchestrating the portion written by Tadolini for which the piano score had survived.
