Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)

Description:

Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) is famous only for his piano concerto "No. 1". We do not know the reason for this, but at any rate, we rarely have a chance to hear No. 2 or No. 3. This No. 2, written between 1879 and 1880 during Tchaikovsky's stay in Carmenka, where his sister was married, has such a powerful atmosphere that it shows no sign of the shock of his failed marriage a short time before. Tchaikovsky dedicated his No. 1 to Nikolai Rubinshtein, but it was heavily criticized. Unfortunately, Rubinshtein died just before the premiere, and Sergei Taneyev played the piano. It is a dramatic work, and the beginning of the second movement, with a rich duet between the violin and cello, is especially moving, but his pupil Giloti cut it out, saying that it was unnecessary. This recording by Nebolsin also uses the unrevised version. The Concerto Fantasy is an 1884 work, also premiered by Taneyev. Naxos Japan
