Even if you’re told it’s Haydn’s (1732–1809) Flute Trio No. 16, you probably can’t picture the melody, can you? When people talk about Haydn’s trios, they’re usually referring to his piano trios, where the piano takes center stage, the violin follows along, and the cello typically plays a token melody. However, in these flute trios, the flute is given center stage. It’s unclear why he chose the flute for these works, but it may have been out of a need to promote the instrument to the British aristocracy. That said, most of the autograph manuscripts have been lost, making it impossible to pinpoint the exact composition dates. Furthermore, these works were sometimes published under the names of other composers (apparently to capitalize on Haydn’s fame), leaving few clues as to their origins. Yet, if you listen to the music, you’ll surely sense the “mark of a true genius” in every piece. While period instrument performances of these three pieces already exist, here you can hear them performed on modern instruments with a contemporary approach. One reason why Haydn’s chamber music—indeed, his entire body of work—has not yet achieved widespread recognition may be that he simply composed too many works. Incidentally, the opening of No. 16 sounds remarkably similar to that famous Mozart piece. Naxos Japan
