This album features a live recording of a concert held on Christmas Day 1974 in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Svetlanov, then 46 years old, was at the peak of his career, and the superhuman ensemble playing of the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra is simply astonishing. At first glance, it appears to be a “masterpieces” concert, but the program selection is actually quite sophisticated. That said, every piece is beautiful and delightful. A highlight is Balakirev’s “Islamey,” orchestrated by Lyapunov. Originally a high-energy piano piece demanding virtuosic technique, Svetlanov unleashes the full power of the orchestra in a performance that borders on ferocious. It also became a talking point because his growls could be heard.
