This disc conveys their styles in classical and romantic music, with a focus on Mozart and Schubert.The structure of the music is clearly presented, with lively rhythms and a pleasant tempo. The slow movement also flows without indulgence, but it has a soft sound and lyricism, and the use of portamento, though modest for a group of the time, evokes the atmosphere of Vienna before World War II. While the later works by Mozart and Schubert fully convey the fullness of the music, the "musical jokes" are less charming and more like serious "jokes". Schumann, with pianist Monato, a pupil of Schnabel's who was supportive of the New Viennese School, is lucid and clear without ambiguity. Rudolf Korisch was born in Kram am Semmering (Semmering), Austria, and studied at the Academy of Music in Vienna (now the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) under Otakar Szewczyk, while studying composition with Franz Schreker and conducting with Franz Schalk. After three years of military service in World War I, he became a student of Schoenberg in 1919, along with Hans Eisler, Victor Ullmann, and Rudolf Serkin, and founded the Vienna String Quartet to perform works for his teacher's private performance society, which was renamed the Korisch Quartet in 1927. In 1927, the quartet changed its name to the Korisch Quartet. When Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 while they were touring Europe, they remained in Paris and two years later moved to the United States, where they disbanded in 1941. After that, Korisch taught and played first violin in the Pro Arte String Quartet, but also contributed enthusiastically to the performance of new works as a soloist, until his death in 1978. Due to injuries sustained as a boy, Korisch played violin in his right hand and bow in his left, and the Korisch Quartet was also known for playing by heart. (Naxos Japan)
