Description:
Love songs that colored the aristocratic society of the French Baroque. Under the absolute monarch Louis XIV, who was well versed in all the subtleties of culture, the court songs (aières de coeur) of the previous century developed, and Lully, the royal music director, vividly musicalized French rhymes and produced a series of masterpiece French operas in 17th-century France. The upper classes, however, were not limited to such solid artistic styles, but also enjoyed lighter, shorter songs that sang simple, short verses about love stories. The songs were so popular that the Ballar Press, which was entrusted with publishing the music under royal charter, compiled three compilations of the songs, which have survived to this day. The album is a collection of works by Couperin and Maestro Maestro. This album is an attempt to contextualize Brunet's masterpieces in the world of late French Baroque court music, including instrumental works by such royal contemporaries as Couperin and Marais.The four singers are led by Van Mechelen, a singer at the height of her popularity and an excellent interpreter of various baroque operas, church music, and songs, Anna Besson, a transverse flute player active with Jean Rondeau's ensemble Nevermind, and Miriam Lignol, who recorded Bach's Suite for unaccompanied cello in the French style for viola. Miriam Lignol and four other talented talents play with subtlety and brilliance. The ensemble is surprisingly skillful, and the beautiful voice of Van Mechelen, who supports them, is also intoxicating. Naxos Japan
