Description:
Hans Leo Hassler, a late Renaissance composer from Nuremberg. He studied in Italy as a young man and is known for bringing the Venetian school of music's Concertato style to Germany. As an excellent organist, he served Octavian II of the wealthy Fugger family in Augsburg and composed many works. His works, which make full use of strict German counterpoint but have graceful Italian-style melodies, were published and circulated from his early years and enjoyed great popularity. Most of the works on this album were published in his 20s, including "Magnificat in Eighth Symphony," which includes organ solo, and "Mass in Eight Voices," one of Hassler's best-known works. The performance is by a small group of elite singers, the Ensemble Vox Arcangeli, with one singer per part, directed by Manuel Schuen, organist and conductor.
