Description:

Completed in 1899, "Once upon a time," based on an old fairy tale about a beautiful princess and a prince with a magic water heater, was premiered in 1900 at the Vienna Court Opera (later the Vienna State Opera) under Mahler's direction. Mahler himself gave Zemlinsky advice on composition and libretto, and the work was quite a tour de force. However, after about 10 performances, it was forgotten. Later, the Danish poet Holger Druckmann's work was used as the basis for a revival of the work by the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1987, which itself became the catalyst for the revival of Zemlinsky's work. Capriccio's recording of this legendary project has long been the only available recording of the work, and now it has been reissued in a newly remastered version.
