This is the debut album by soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn, who made her English National Opera debut in 2010 with the role of Mimi in Puccini's "La Bohème. Here she chose not the usual collection of arias, but a collection of songs by London-born composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who is of Sierra Leonean descent. What a variety of these songs, which had lain dormant and largely unperformed. The album begins with "Six Sorrowful Songs" on a poem by Christina Rossetti, followed by "Southern Love Songs" reminiscent of Latin music and flamenco styles, the sensual "Songs of Sun and Shade," and "African Romance" on a poem by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, an American writer who greatly influenced Coleridge-Taylor. The final song is "Life and Death," which shows Llewellyn's deep sympathy for the brilliant composer known as the "dark-skinned Mahler. Naxos Japan
