A Magnificent Performance That Embodied the Bond Between the Maestro and the Orchestra! Jansons’s Final Concert Listening to this recording brings a flood of emotions to mind. The Jansons I knew was a sincere, unpretentious musician who focused solely on the very essence of music. When this concert took place in New York, the members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra—who loved him dearly—must have sensed deep down that this would be their last opportunity to perform with him. Their surging emotions are evident in Brahms’s “Fourth,” and as a listener, it is impossible to remain unmoved. --Kōkichi Shiroshita (Music Critic, based in Berlin) The final concert of the renowned conductor Maris Jansons (1943–2019), who passed away suddenly in 2019, is being released on CD. It is a concert at Carnegie Hall with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he served as principal conductor. It seems the audience there was aware that Jansons was not in good health, but perhaps this added a certain sense of tension; “once he took the podium, he delivered a performance brimming with astonishing vitality,” , and in the end, “in addition to his decades-long dedication to music, his indomitable spirit earned him a respectful and heartfelt ovation from the New York audience” (concert review from SeenandHeardInternational). Jansson canceled all of his concerts scheduled for the following days, and three weeks later, he passed away. The program featured Richard Strauss’s “Four Symphonic Interludes from the Opera *Intermezzo*” and “Four Last Songs” (not included on this album) in the first half—works he had loved throughout his life—while the second half consisted of Brahms’s “Symphony No. 4.” While both works were performed with great beauty, the Brahms was particularly magnificent. The crystal-clear tone of the flute solo rising from the surging interplay of sounds in the final movement, and the delicacy of the chorale beginning with the trombones—these are achievements made possible by the deep bond and trust between the orchestra and the maestro.
