Offenbach's short but coherent, ironic, and humorous comedy in one act, "The Evicted Husbandman," was staged at the Fiorentino Maggio Musicale to commemorate the bicentennial of Offenbach's birth. The work, which premiered in 1859, depicts the manners and customs of French bourgeois society at the time Offenbach was active, with a satirical storyline and Offenbach's typically delightful polkas, mazurkas, and waltzes interspersed throughout the scenes. The work has often been performed in France, where it is very popular, but the music has been newly orchestrated for this performance, making it even more colorful and enjoyable.
