Cui is famous as one of the five Russian composers, but his origins are international: his father was born in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania (then a Russian territory), and his mother was of Lithuanian and Polish descent. Fluent in foreign languages, he visited France, Belgium, and other foreign countries during his long life, and continued to compose extensively beyond Russian nationalism. He was also a skilled critic, and his compositions were based on a thorough understanding of the state of Russian music as seen from the outside. He wrote many songs, some of them with French lyrics. He wrote six songs based on the works of important French 19th century poets such as Copée, Prudhomme, Hugo, and others (1884), and a large collection of songs with lyrics by Jean Richepin (1891), a prolific poet and playwright who occupies a unique place in the history of French literature, All of these "Cuis as French Music" were written and published in France at the same time as Debussy's early songs, Fauré, Chausson, and others.This is a remarkable recording in which Céline Lalli, an old music singer who is already active at the forefront in Germany, Italy, and other countries, and Emmanuelle Christian, a talented graduate of the Paris Conservatory, interpret the style that has a subtle hint of exoticism in its detailed fin de siècle sentiment as "French art".
