Antwerp (Dutch name Antwerpen) is a Dutch-speaking city in northwestern Belgium, where Latin and Germanic cultures intermingle, and also Catholicism and Calvinism. The instrument built here in 1654 by Nicolaus van Hagen was a large one with 47 stops, three tiers of keys and pedals, and 4,000 pipes, the front of which was designed by Rubens' pupils, Erasmus Querinus II (1607-1678) and Father Pater Fairbruggen ( 1615-1686). Although it has undergone many changes over the years, including partial relocations, expansions, and major restorations, it is still an important part of Antwerpen's history, decorated with ornate Rubensian carvings and playing wonderful sounds. German-born organist Gebhard Gefferts will use the instrument to play organ works from his native Northern Germany, including many pieces from the 18th century collection of carillon melodies from Flanders by Johann de Freitels, as well as Cunau's "Biblical Sonata" and the "Piano Sonata" by Gerhard Gefferts. The concert will also feature the "Biblical Sonata" by Kuhnau.The album is available on SACD, mastered by Everett Porter of Polyhymnia, and features excellent recordings using four B&K 4006 microphones and others.
