The second release from Vanguard Records, a landmark of the 1960s folk revival. Produced by the master Maynard Solomon, this studio recording captures the essence of traditional folk. In addition to Baez’s refined soprano voice and guitar, the renowned bluegrass group the Greenbrier Boys make guest appearances on two tracks: “Bank of the Ohio” and “Palof Mine,” a song familiar from the Carter Family. A historic masterpiece in which banjo and harmonies introduced a new dynamism to folk music. Released in 1961, it was nominated for “Best Contemporary Folk Performance” at the 5th Grammy Awards. Meticulously crafted from a carefully selected repertoire of 14 traditional songs, this album can be described as a form of “comparative musical geography,” in which a single interpreter systematizes the history of folk song migration—specifically, how old British folk songs spread to the Appalachian region of the American South. In the opening track, “Wagoner’s Lad,” an acoustic guitar and a cool, clear voice showcase the unadorned charm of a traditional ballad. The album then unfolds with songs that trace fates buried in the shadows of history, such as “The Trees They Do Grow High,” which dispassionately depicts an unreasonable political marriage; the Marian ballad “The Cherry Tree Carol”; and “Barbara Allen,” which tells of a tragic 18th-century love story. Furthermore, the bonus tracks include rare, early African American spirituals and sea shanties, demonstrating the breadth of her musical range. Notes: All Days Editorial Department
