The debut album by Phila Brasilia—a popular act on the 1990s UK club scene led by Balearic legend Steve Cobby—has been reissued on “ForeverRecords,” a highly anticipated new label launched by the teams behind Rush Hour and Delkin. Phila Brasilia is an electronic duo from Yorkshire, UK, consisting of Steve Cobby and David McSherry. They consistently released music from the mid-90s through the 2000s, establishing themselves as a popular act. Cobey has continued to be active both with the group and as a solo artist in recent years; well-known for his remixes of Gigi Machine and Darren Emerson, he has established himself as a core producer leading the current Balearic scene. This release, *OldCodesNewChaos*, is Filia Brasilia’s debut album, originally released in 1994. The original release came from “Pork Recordings,” a pioneering downtempo label that Coby co-ran at the time. It features the landmark debut single “Mermaids,” bursting with the cinematic phrases familiar from Art of Noise; the soothing, melting electric piano of “Brazilifification”; the rocking “Pots & Pans”; the laid-back “The Sheriffff”; and more. Incorporating elements of techno, house, breakbeats, downtempo, and jazz—yet it slips effortlessly through the cracks of genre classification, offering an eclectic, highly original, and deeply rich sound.
