Description:
Overflowing Poetic Sensibility, Musicality, and Beautiful Tone De Swarte, the New Standard-Bearer of Early Music Violin Featuring Christy’s Overwhelming Improvisations A Heartfelt Tribute to Rameau De Swart, the new standard-bearer of Baroque violin, has released a heartfelt album dedicated to Rameau, featuring a magnificent collaboration with William Christie on the harpsichord. “It all began with a portrait. It is a portrait of Jean-Philippe Rameau, attributed to Joseph Aved. This great composer and music theorist, renowned for his operas and harpsichord works, is depicted not at the keyboard, but holding a violin. The painting captures a fleeting moment, as if time had stood still. Rameau appears to be about to pluck a string, with the index finger of his left hand positioned where it would be for the note B-natural. It seems as if he is inviting the viewer to listen to that enigmatic note. When I first saw this portrait, I felt a desire to create a musical world inspired by it. I wanted to step into the canvas and reveal the lifelong relationship between the composer and his violin. Conceived as a journey of discovery, this program spans from Rameau’s youth—when, according to anecdotal accounts, he joined a troupe of traveling musicians in southern France and performed as a violinist—to the time he fully immersed himself in the world of opera with his first full-length stage work, *Hippolyte et Alcyone*. By bringing together arrangements of opera arias, excerpts from dance suites, and sonatas by virtuoso violinists and composers who were active during Rameau’s time and with whom he interacted, this program traces the little-known connection between Rameau and the violin. ” (Words by De Swart, translated from the liner notes) (1/2) HARMONIAMUNDI
