Miles Davis, one of the most influential trumpeters in the history of jazz. Born in 1926 in Alton, Illinois, as the son of a dentist, Miles grew up in an environment where his mother was a music teacher and took up the trumpet in his early teens. After moving to East St. Louis the year after his birth, he performed with a St. Louis jazz band located across the river. At the age of 18, he moved to New York to attend the Juilliard School of Music, where he joined Charlie Parker’s band and witnessed the birth of bebop firsthand; by the age of 21, he was leading his own sessions. In the 1950s, he contributed significantly to the development of a style known as hard bop, and in the late 1950s, he introduced the methodology known as modal jazz. He continued to be a pioneer of innovative styles such as funk jazz and fusion (crossover), exerting a lasting influence on the jazz world. By the time of his death in 1991, people had come to refer to Miles—who always kept his eye on the times—as the “Emperor of Modern Jazz.” This album compiles recordings from Miles’ early days as a bandleader through the 1950s, showcasing his brilliant legacy in jazz history. The compilation is beginner-friendly, featuring several incredibly famous tracks that even those unfamiliar with jazz are likely to have heard somewhere. The bonus CD (Disc 2) includes 10 essential tracks by jazz giants that every listener should know.
