From New York: A fusion of Japanese tanka and jazz/large ensemble. An original debut album by alto saxophonist Hina Oikawa, who incorporates the 31-syllable structure of tanka into her improvisational playing. “ShortSongs” is the debut album by New York-based alto saxophonist and composer/arranger Hina Oikawa. Produced in collaboration with talented young New York musicians and under the musical direction of Ryan Keberle—a prominent figure in today’s big-band scene—this album brings together Oikawa’s extensive experience as a tanka poet with the jazz and large ensemble genres. This ambitious work by Oikawa—who is also active as a tanka poet—brings together “tanka,” a form she has studied extensively, with jazz and large ensembles. She not only uses the words of tanka as lyrics but also incorporates the very structure of the “5-7-5-7-7” thirty-one-syllable form into the composition and improvisation of her pieces, creating a unique musical world. In the opening track, “Introduction,” the syllable count of tanka is reconstructed as a rhythmic pattern, while the final track, “Thirty-One Syllables,” incorporates the thirty-one characters into the skeletal structure of the melody. The concept that “freedom lies precisely within the constraints of a fixed form” runs throughout the entire album. Vietnamese-American singer My Tam Huynh contributes vocals. Her crystal-clear voice—despite Japanese not being her native language—naturally blends the world of tanka into the music. This original debut album is a convergence of the rich sound of a contemporary large ensemble, Japan’s poetic tradition, and New York-style improvisation. The arrangements are supported by rich creativity and solid compositional skill. By blending contemporary jazz with Japanese roots, this album possesses a charm unlike any other. It is an album that makes a strong impression, marking the arrival of an artist with a truly original creative vision.
