Antoine Tamestit is a rare virtuoso who fills the space with transcendent music that no longer fits in the frame of instruments such as viola and strings. Tamestit has recorded Telemann! The concerto is a collaboration with the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music, which recently released the Brandenburg Concerto (KKC-6418, HMM-902686), an overwhelmingly masterful performance. Telemann is a pioneer in writing works in which the viola plays a leading role, so this is a remarkable performance. Telemann's unaccompanied works, originally written for solo violin, are somewhat different in scale from Bach's unaccompanied works, but in terms of content, they are as profound as Bach's unaccompanied works and have become important repertoire pieces for viola players today. The Concerto for two violas is also played with a calm and serene atmosphere. The suite, too, is played with great elegance.
