Lotto and Siecle's next new album anticipates Berlioz's anniversary year. With Tabea Zimmermann! Lotto and Les Siecle's new album is a Berlioz release that has been the talk of the town for years. Berlioz died in 1869, so 2019 is the 150th anniversary of his death. Lhoto's Berlioz is the "Symphonie fantastique" recorded in 2009, and this new recording surprises us with Lhoto's maturity and the orchestra's growth in the 10 years since then. Berlioz was not only a reformer of orchestration but also an instrument geek, keeping a close eye on the latest developments in instrument making. Like a chef, he was quick to adapt. So much so, according to Lotto, that modern instruments cannot produce the true effect Berlioz envisioned. That was realized this time. Two pieces were performed with soloists. Harold in Italia" is a concerto work with a viola soloist, composed at the request of Paganini, although it is billed as a symphony. The soloist is always a great viola player, and here he was accompanied by a great star, Tabea Zimmermann.Zimmermann has performed this work solo with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Colin Davis in 2003 and on DVD with Eschenbach & Orchestre de Paris, but this performance with a period orchestra was of great interest to me. From the moment the viola appeared, I was drawn in by its deep, yet clear singing. The solo singing of "Summer Nights" was originally a collection of pieces for different vocal registers, but here baritone Stéphane Dugoux sang the entire piece by himself. The use of a baritone was also Lotto's opinion, creating an ideal world. Once again, the booklet clearly lists all the instruments used except for the strings and the year of production, a valuable source of information. Lotto's playing is increasingly exquisite, allowing us to rediscover Berlioz's orchestral genius. King International
