Clarinet virtuoso Harry Scholer’s debut release on his own label is a tribute to jazz legends This is the landmark debut album from clarinet virtuoso Harry Scholer on his own label, “Red Brick Hill.” The title refers to the names of the musicians featured on the nine tracks, each of which was inspired by the artists Scholer encountered between the ages of 14 and 30, including Bill Evans, James Williams, Lassan Roland Kirk, Marian McPartland, Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Juffre, Lionel Hampton, and Miles Davis. Now 69 years old, Scholer performs these pieces with a highly interactive quartet featuring guitar master Bill Frisell and the ever-synchronized bass and drums of Desron Douglas and Jonathan Blake. They integrate the wide range of emotional expressions evoked by Scholer’s compositions with the unfiltered yet finely tuned screams, shrill sounds, moans, and whispers that color his improvisations, sharing his stories and giving them meaning with deep empathy and creative inspiration.
