Charles Gerhardt grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he studied piano at age 5 and composition at age 9.He studied music and engineering at several universities, including the University of Illinois, and piano privately at the Juilliard School. Formal education for him was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Aleutian Navy as a minister's assistant. After the war, he was a clerk at Record Hunter on Lexington Avenue in New York City, but from 1951 to 1955 he worked for RCA Victor as a recording technician transferring Caruso and Schnabel's 78 rpm recordings to tape, including removing scratches in preparation for LP re-releases. In 1954, he made experimental stereo recordings of Menotti's "Sebastian" and Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" ballet suites with Stokowski and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. He then went on to make his last major recording as a conductor. He was later encouraged by Toscanini to study conducting while working as RCA's liaison with Toscanini in his final years as a conductor, and later studied conducting with Horenstein.(1/2) Sony Music
