John Wilson, who is at the height of his powers, will start off alongside Korngold (CHSA5220) with a collection of orchestral works by Eric Coates (1886-1957), one of the leading composers and conductors of the heyday of British light music. Influenced by Arthur Sullivan and Edward Jarman in his early years, Eric Coates' music evolved in its own way, incorporating elements of jazz and dance bands. The catchy melodies of "By the Sleepy Lagoon" and "Knightsbridge March" (the last movement of the suite "London") have been familiar to the world, and are performed by John Wilson, who has been performing Eric Coates' works for many years.
