The monumental concert that thrills Viennese audiences every year! Along with the New Year's Concert, the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert is one of the Philharmonic's most famous events and has become an established tradition of early summer in Vienna since its inception in 2004. The open-air concert, held at Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is free of charge and open to 100,000 music fans, and is broadcast live (or recorded) to more than 60 countries around the world. The concert has featured a distinguished lineup of conductors, including Gergiev, Dudamel, Barenboim, Welser-Möst, Maazel, Eschenbach, and Mehta, and has also featured pianists Lang Lang and Buchbinder. The appearance of pianists Lan Lang and Buchbinder also shows that this concert is regarded as one of the most important concerts for the Vienna Philharmonic.Sony Classical has been releasing these "Summer Night Concerts" since 2013, and this year, 2017, the fifth edition of the series, will feature Christoph Eschenbach for the second time since 2014. The last time Eschenbach performed with the Vienna Philharmonic was at the 1977 Salzburg Festival, where he performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 as a pianist with Muti conducting. His first collaboration as a conductor was in 2003 at the Vienna Art Week with Bruckner's "Symphony No. 7", and since then he has been a regular regular with the Vienna Philharmonic on subscription and touring engagements, touring Japan in 2011 and 2015, and in 2014 he was entrusted with "Don Giovanni" at the Salzburg Festival.
