The last great symphony of the late Romantic period is being reevaluated. Inheriting the veil of Bruckner and Brahms, Bischoff and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra have devoted their energies to depicting Franz Schmidt's masterpiece. Austrian composer Franz Schmidt (1874-1939), who has been rapidly re-evaluated in recent years, was born in the same year as Schoenberg, but is known for his profound late Romantic style in the tradition of Bruckner and Brahms. He was a cellist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra during Mahler's time, and from 1927 he was appointed dean of the Vienna Academy of Music, leaving a significant mark on the Austrian music scene. In addition to the opera "Notre Dame," for which he has long been famous for its interludes, and the oratorio "The Seven Seals," based on the Book of Revelation, his four remaining symphonies have been increasingly performed and recorded in recent years, especially the Symphony No. 2, written in 1911/13, known for its huge orchestration including eight horns and percussion, and featuring three The three movements are linked by a motto theme, and the naive lyricism and delicate changes in harmony are beautiful.The Vienna Philharmonic, which has performed this piece with the composer himself as well as with various masters since Weingartner conducted it a year after its premiere, recorded it with master conductor Semyon Bishkov in 2015, when it was performed intensively in subscription concerts and on a European tour to great acclaim. The coupling is the interlude "Slumber at the Hearth" from the opera "Intermezzo" written in 1923 by R. Strauss, who also had a close connection with Vienna. Semyon Bishkov was born in Leningrad in 1952. He studied with Mushin at the Leningrad Conservatory, won the first prize at the Rachmaninoff Conducting Competition in 1973, and moved to the U.S. in 1980, where he served as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris, Principal Conductor of the Dresden State Opera, and Chief Conductor of the Cologne Radio Symphony.
