Symphony No. 5 "Return to Middle Earth" made a splash with its Japan (Asia) premiere in April 2019, conducted by the Osaka Zion Wind Orchestra x Johan de Mey himself. The CD release of the piece, performed by the St. Michael's Symphony Orchestra of Torun, has been eagerly awaited by many. Symphony No. 5" is based on the story "Middle-earth" by J. R. R. Tolkien and was composed as part of the project to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the premiere of "Symphony No. 1: The Lord of the Rings". It is a magnificent work in six movements written for soprano solo voice, a mixed chorus of over 80 singers, and a wind orchestra. It is interesting to note that the lyrics for soprano and chorus are written in Ilkorin, a language created by Tolkien (one of the medieval Elvish languages). Johan de Mey's skillful orchestration, the soprano who sings with great earnestness, and the harmonies of the mixed chorus create a variety of sounds that draw the listener into the world of Johan de Mey without feeling the time, even though it is a large work of about 44 minutes.Johan de Mey, his longest work, "Symphony No. 5 Return to Middle Earth," is a must-hear.
