In the 2007/08 season the orchestra's new chief embarked with them on a major project, a complete Mahler symphony cycle, and it has now been confirmed that the recordings will appear on LSO Live. Gergiev's first Mahler recording of any kind, this opening release is the Symphony No. 6 "Tragic", which caused a considerable stir last November at the LSO's Barbican home on the 22nd, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels on the 24th, and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on the 25th. As the fact that the whole work fits onto a single disc suggests, the defining feature of the Gergiev/LSO reading is its swift tempo throughout. The first movement disregards Mahler's marking - "fast and vigorous, but not too much so" - and hurtles forward as if pursued. As in Mariss Jansons's live LSO account of the Sixth (October 2003, LSO.0038), the Andante is placed second; and even in this passage, where some of Mahler's most narcotic beauty is concentrated, the listener is never allowed the luxury of complete absorption. By the finale the music accelerates further, to the very brink of collapse. One begins to suspect that these extreme tempos were the inevitable choice for a conductor intent on laying bare the neurotic side of Mahler's music and confronting us afresh with the anxiety and unease of contemporary life.
