Rossini: *The Italian Girl in Algiers* (2CD) This is the latest release in the Rossini Opera Festival series presented by DYNAMIC. It’s a brand-new recording made just a few months ago: *The Italian Girl in Algiers*. Not only is this a new recording of the opera—the first in quite some time—but the cast of singers is also fresh and vibrant. Marianna Pizzolato is a “Cinderella girl” who was handpicked in 2004 to step in for Casarova in the title role of *Tancredi*, where she achieved great success. Maxim Mironov is the Russian tenor who made headlines in October for his performance in the Fujiwara Opera Company’s *The Journey to Reims*. Marco Vinko is the bass who received rave reviews in the Fujiwara Opera Company’s *The Italian in Turkey* in 2003. All three are still young singers, and the festival’s commitment to actively discovering such talent has truly paid off. Joining them is veteran Bruno De Simone as Taddeo, who brings a commanding presence to the role. With Rossini expert Renzetti conducting and the Bologna Orchestra providing the musical backing, the production is in excellent hands. The aria for Lindoro in Act II features the version that Rossini rewrote himself. A DVD release is planned.
