The second release of the Wigmore Soloists is a collection of major clarinet trios performed by van Keulen, Collins, and McHale! a variable chamber ensemble created in collaboration with Wigmore Hall director John Gilhooly. Following their debut recording of Schubert's Octet (BIS SA-2597), their second release is a collection of major clarinet trios performed by Collins, van Keulen, and Michael McHale! Mozart's "Kegelstadt Trio" is said to have been composed while playing the original Kegeln of bowling. It is a masterpiece that reveals charming melodies not only on the clarinet, but also on the viola and piano. Schumann's "Fairy Tale" has a friendly and playful atmosphere. It is a work of Schumann's last year, 1854, despite its carefree and vivacious nature. The "Eight Pieces" is a nostalgic piece from Bruch's later years. Bruch is best known for his Violin Concerto No. 1, but his most beautiful melodies are also found throughout the "Eight Pieces. Stravinsky's "A Soldier's Tale" was written for a small group of artists who were impoverished during World War I. It was written with the idea that it could be performed by a small group and easily toured.However, Stravinsky himself and his associates fell ill one after another from the Spanish influenza epidemic of the time, and the planned tour was never realized. This recording features the composer's arrangement for clarinet, violin, and piano trio. The work is full of Stravinsky's individuality, incorporating elements of tango, jazz, and many other styles.
