This latest recording by the Stockholm Philharmonic—one of Sweden’s leading orchestras—and Sakari Oramo, who has served as its principal conductor since 2008, features Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4, “The Immortal,” and Symphony No. 5. Oramo’s performance of Elgar’s Symphony No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 63 (BISSA1879), with the Stockholm Philharmonic—a performance brimming with the confidence and pride befitting the orchestra’s chief conductor—was magnificent, and this recording of Nielsen’s symphonies is an even more passionate performance than expected! Symphony No. 4, “The Immortal,” was composed in 1914, during the first half of World War I—a time when even Denmark, having declared neutrality, could by no means enjoy a period of peace and stability. Composition continued amid growing anxiety over the expanding war and the economic deterioration that accompanied it, but this work—which held high the conviction of human immortality even in those dark days—later became one of Nielsen’s signature pieces. Meanwhile, No. 5 was composed in 1922—the same year Nielsen completed his Woodwind Quintet, Op. 43—a period when his creative powers had reached their peak. The effective use of the snare drum in the piece is interpreted as reflecting a distant, adult nostalgia for the military-style snare drum sounds from his youth, when, due to his family’s poverty, he had joined a military band to finally quench his thirst for music.
