This collection of Sibelius’s piano works features recordings made on the piano from Sibelius’s own home at Ainola, where he lived with his family for many years, performed by Folke Glasbeck, who is also renowned as a scholar of Sibelius’s works. Although Glasbeck recorded some of these works for the Complete Works of Sibelius (BIS1927), those recordings are distinct from the ones on this disc. Not only does it allow listeners to enjoy Sibelius’s masterpieces—such as the piano transcriptions of orchestral works like “Finlandia” and “The Sad Waltz”—but it also includes some of Sibelius’s early miniatures, making this a fascinating album even for those who aren’t die-hard Sibelius fans. Incidentally, the piano used for this recording is the Steinway that Sibelius received as a gift for his 50th birthday; it is said that he cherished this instrument ever since. King International
