John McCabe (1939–2015) was a key figure in the British music world who was active not only as a composer but also as an outstanding pianist, and who earned high acclaim for his recording of Haydn’s complete piano sonatas. His works span a wide range, from ballets, symphonies, and concertos to chamber music, choral works, and pieces for brass band; this album features three of his major orchestral works. His Symphony No. 2, composed in 1970–71, features a tightly structured composition that incorporates five sections within a single, sweeping movement, distinguished by its strong rhythmic drive and lucid orchestration. Symphony No. 3, “Homage” (1978), centers on a tribute to Haydn and Nielsen, weaving in quotations and allusions while unfolding a colorful and vibrant sound.
