The long-awaited ECM debut album from Avishai Cohen, the most talked-about trumpeter born in Tel Aviv, is finally here. "Cohen is a multicultural jazz musician, and he follows in the footsteps of Miles Davis. Like Miles, he uses the trumpet to express the most moving human cries." - The New York Times Avichai Cohen, who captured listeners' hearts with his performance on Mark Turner's 2014 release Lathe of Heaven, visited Japan for TOKYO JAZZ 2015, where many were captivated by his overwhelming performance. This album consists entirely of Avichai's original compositions, all of which are expansive, impressionistic pieces for a jazz quartet (trumpet, piano, bass, drums). (A few songs also feature the tenor saxophone.) It is dedicated to the memory of Avichai's father, David, and depicts his father's final days, which were marked by elegance and restraint. Avishai's gentle muted trumpet sets the emotional tone for the entire album from the very first moment, but the talented musicians explore the music together, developing a more impressionistic world. Israeli pianist Yonathan Avishai has performed with Cowen in various bands and solo, actively participating in Cowen's unforgettable songs, sometimes using blues phrases to make the songs shine even brighter. Cowen and drummer Nasheet Waits understand each other as if they were telepathic, interacting moment by moment in a way reminiscent of Miles and Tony Williams in their prime, or Don Cherry and Billy Higgins, yet it is wonderful that this is the music of today. Eric Revis, who served as the bassist for the Branford Marsalis Quartet for 20 years, provides superbly refined support throughout the album. Saxophonist Bill McHenry, who has performed with Paul Motian and Andrew Cyrille, among others, is a highly skilled modernist who expresses himself with emotion, like a shadow to Cowen's playing.This work was recorded in July 2015 at Studios La Buissonne in southern France, produced by Manfred Eicher.
