Formed in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1983, THE JASMINE MINKS became the first band signed to CREATION RECORDS, founded by ALAN MCGEE. Frontman JIM SHEPHERD is a key figure who laid the foundation for the 1980s indie scene with his fresh yet punk-infused melodic sensibility. For the production of this album, Dave Morgan of The Loft—another early ally of the label—played a full role on drums and synths, as well as handling production and mixing. The core lineup behind *The Circle*, the de facto precursor released under Jim Shepherd’s name in 2022, has reunited as Pillars of Creation. Released in 2026, this album weaves together eight carefully selected tracks from a total of 14 new songs written during a hiatus taken to care for his son’s illness. While retaining echoes of the raw guitar pop of the C86 era and early Creation, the sound has taken a dramatic turn toward a grand soundscape that boldly incorporates strings and spoken word. In particular, the 18-minute suite that occupies the entire B-side—inspired by Maurice Maeterlinck’s play *The Blue Bird*—is a monumental rock opera that sonically captures the process of accepting reality. It is the masterpiece of his career, where introspective stillness intertwines with dynamic sounds reflecting influences from PRINCE and the turmoil of the world. The eight tracks, featuring ensembles where acoustic warmth and progressive elements blend, exude a unique texture where a sense of celebration coexists with shadow. Centered on lyrics that seem to gaze into the depths of life, and enhanced by DAVEMORGAN’s multi-layered arrangements, the result is a wide-ranging sonic work that transcends the confines of mere indie pop. This is a supreme testament to the essence of JIMSHEPHERD’s songwriting, brought to fruition through the chemical reaction with his new collaborators. It is a work imbued with timeless beauty that will surely resonate not only with fans who remember the fervor of the scene’s heyday but also with listeners who appreciate contemporary psychedelic folk and post-rock.
