With his unwavering leadership and exceptional musicality, he continues to refine the LPO’s sound. This recording marks Gardner’s third Tippett recording on the LPO label. Following the highly acclaimed *The Midsummer Marriage* and *Piano Concerto, Symphony No. 2*, his deep empathy for Tippett’s uniquely complex and emotionally dense music is evident throughout this moving interpretation. Tippett’s “modern oratorio,” *Children of Our Time*, inspired by the true story of a young Jewish man who protested against Nazi Germany, was composed in 1942. While adhering to the form of a Bach Passion, Tippett incorporated spirituals (African-American hymns) to appeal to people’s hearts across religious divides and avoid giving the work a distinctly Christian tone. It is a thought-provoking work in which a tense narrative unfolds.
