Dandrieu / Belder

Description:

Speaking of French Baroque clavecin (= harpsichord) music, Couperin and Rameau's character pieces with titles like Eric Satie's are well known, but Dandrieu, a contemporary, is not to be outdone. In particular, "Attack" from "Aspects of War," which describes the battlefield, has an impressive sound of a cannon imitated by a harpsichord, and its influence on Michel Collet's shocking work of 13 eight-chord sequences in "Sea Battle," written half a century later, must have been significant. Moreover, Dandrieu's even instructs that it is acceptable to strike the lowest part of the keyboard with the palm of the hand, as in the cluster technique. It remains to be seen whether Belder's choice is harmony or cluster, but what is most impressive is the fact that the entire three-volume Klavsan cycle can be heard in one recording. This is the first time in history that this has been done. The Dandrieu Collection of Clavissant Pieces, which seems to include many works on the level of Couperin and Rameau, has only been recorded in one volume so far: excerpts from Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Odebourg in the 1970s and excerpts from Volume 1 by Pappas in 2001, and the rest of the recordings have been collections of selections. The others were a collection of selections. The Brilliant Classics set on this occasion is a major undertaking, with all three volumes of the Klavsin cycle on four CDs, a project that shows the enthusiasm of Dandrieu, who became a court musician, stabilized his position, and spent a decade from 1724 to publish all three volumes. Among the highly anticipated "Aspects of War" Dandrieu's compositions, the best known were the "Aspects of War" included in Volume 1, especially the fifth piece, "Attack" (CD 1, track 12), which was also famous for its representation of the sound of cannon fire. In short, Dandrieu himself was willing to use the palm cluster technique, and among the six different performances we have been able to hear so far, only the Pappas disc used the cluster technique, while the other five were orthodox and responded with strong four-chord playing. It remains to be seen whether Belder's choice this time is chords or cluster technique, but even in the case of chords, if the recording is excellent, the cluster technique is not inferior, and Brilliant Classics' harpsichord recordings have a track record of consistently high quality. And above all, since this is the "Aspects of War" in a large three-volume collection of clavesan works, it seems more appropriate to use the chordal technique. Incidentally, the following six recordings have been made available for easy listening. Pauline Aubert (1935 Pathe), Brigitte Odobourg (1977 Arion), Jean-Patrice Brosse (1985 Pierre Verany), Iakovos Pappas (2001 Ogam), Betty Bryantz (2002 Pavane), Marouane Mancard-Bennis ( 2017 Encelade)(1/5)
