Description:
The Debut CD by Classical Guitarist Tohito Shimazaki, Who Is Based in the Kansai Region Tohito Shimazaki’s unique interpretations and playing style breathe new life into classical miniatures Has there ever been a classical guitar performance this enjoyable to listen to? This is the debut CD by Tohito Shimazaki, a classical guitarist from Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, who is based in the Kansai region. Shimazaki is currently 74 years old. Although he is a veteran with a career spanning over 50 years, he has never studied under a teacher. Due to his unique playing style, he has been treated as an outsider and has not received the recognition he deserves to this day. While nearly all 17 tracks on this album are well-known classical miniatures, the moment the sound is produced, the crisp attack and expressive tone present a world distinct from that of a conventional classical guitar. The secret to this sound lies in Shimazaki’s unique playing technique—developed over many years—and his modified guitar. The former primarily involves Shimazaki plucking the guitar strings at an angle—a technique that is extremely difficult to describe in writing. The latter was achieved through a bold modification: the bridge was shaved away, leaving only the saddle, and holes were drilled into the guitar’s top (soundboard) to secure the strings. Incidentally, Shimazaki, who is very dexterous, carried out the guitar modifications himself. The album cover and booklet feature heartwarming illustrations that contrast with the mood of the music, yet they express Shimazaki’s vision for his compositions. Incidentally, all the illustrations were created by Shimazaki’s top female disciple. This album was originally released in November 2021 as an independent production on the Alquimista label, a subsidiary of WaonRecords, but is now being re-released in its original form under the new label ShinRec (the actual producer of this CD). We invite you to experience not only Shimazaki’s one-of-a-kind performance but also the natural, atmospheric sound achieved through ShinRec’s signature high-fidelity recording method—using two microphones and DSD 5.6 MHz. This album received high praise for both the performance and recording from Mr. Hiroshi Hosen in the “In the Margins of Sound” column in the January 2022 issue of *Stereo Magazine*, where he serves as editorial advisor, and in the “Music Gendai” magazine (March 2022 issue) in the “Music Gendai New Release Reviews” column by Professor Hiroshi Hosen. *This is a reissue of the CD originally released as an independent production by WAONRECORDS on November 19, 2021.
