A collection of Dvořák recordings brought to life by the international BPO members with their exceptional technical skill and fresh musicality! These two discs bring together Dvořák performances by members of the Berlin Philharmonic from the golden age of Karajan. At that time, the Berlin Philharmonic had expanded its repertoire beyond German and Austrian works to include French and Slavic music. While preserving the rich, traditional sound of the orchestra, the musicians broadened their expressive range, acquiring the technical skill to skillfully capture the regional characteristics and and the stylistic characteristics of the era. In these Dvořák recordings, rather than relying solely on Czech national character, the musicians prioritize the inherent structural integrity, supple melodic lines, and unique rhythms of the works, meticulously crafting the music with a rich, resonant sound. Through a straightforward musical approach and technically masterful performance, the work’s stylistic character naturally emerges; just as the “New World” Symphony is beloved worldwide, it feels as though we are witnessing these chamber works transcend the confines of Czech music and achieve international recognition. The depth of tone and the beauty of the supple phrasing from the string section, led by Alfred Maleček, are as impressive as their renowned performances of Brahms. The Piano Quintet features a collaboration with the up-and-coming American musician Kovacevic (1940–), who went by the name Stephen Bishop-Kovacevic at the time; the album cover also features Kunio Tsuchiya, a violist who joined the ensemble in 1957. Although the ensemble comprises members raised in different cultures, their performance—which paints a single, beautiful musical world—brings to mind once again the saying that “music is the universal language.”
