Andreas Reitze, the 18th Cantor of the St. Thomas Church Choir! His debut recording as Cantor is the “Mass in B Minor”! The St. Thomas Church Choir (also known as the St. Thomas Church Boys’ Choir or the Leipzig St. Thomas Church Choir) is a boys’ choir in Leipzig with a history spanning nearly 800 years. In September 2021, Andreas Reitze was appointed as the 18th cantor (Thomaskantor/Music Director) of this prestigious choir, where Johann Sebastian Bach served as cantor for 27 years. And in 2022, he recorded Bach’s “Mass in B Minor”—considered the greatest masterpiece in the history of classical music—with a stellar lineup of soloists, marking the long-awaited release of his first album as cantor! Andreas Reitze was born in Solothurn, Switzerland, in 1975. He studied church music, keyboard instruments, and choral and orchestral conducting in Bern, Zurich, Lucerne, Basel, and Graz. Since then, he has been invited to conduct at numerous theaters and concert halls. He has also expanded his scope of activities and garnered attention by leading the period instrument ensemble “Cantus Filmus Consort,” which he founded, to make the world premiere recording of Monteverdi’s monumental work *The Coronation of Poppea* (Naples version) for the Rondeau label (ROP6237384). Well-versed in liturgy and the church calendar, and recognized for his extensive experience directing boys’ choirs, Reitze is a cantor of a new era who made headlines as the first Swiss Catholic Thomas Cantor since the Reformation (previously, the position had been held by Protestant Germans).
