In October 2020, during the Beethoven Year (250th anniversary of his birth), the SWR Schwetzingen Festival presented a four-night series of concerts by the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music highlighting Beethoven and his contemporary composers. This disc is the first collection and includes concerts on the first and second nights. The program for the first night included two symphonies by C.P.E. Bach and Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2. The agile and fresh performance by the small orchestra without a conductor skillfully portrayed the two composers. The second evening featured Vranitsky's Symphony and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, "Hero. Before "Hero," the overture to Mozart's opera "Bastian and Bastienne," which has the same opening motif as the first movement of the same work, was performed. Vranitsky, a native of Moravia, was a close friend of Mozart and a renowned conductor at the time, and is known to have been commissioned by Beethoven to premiere his First Symphony. The work is reminiscent of Mozart's works, with a light and mellow style influenced by Haydn, but with skillful orchestral techniques.Enjoy the music of Beethoven and his contemporaries performed by the players of the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music, who are versatile on period instruments.
