Description:
The Tempest" was composed in 1925-1926 in parallel with the symphonic poem "Tapiola". The music to Shakespeare's play of the same name was written at the end of Sibelius' creative career, just before the so-called "Silence of the Järvenpää", and is considered one of his most famous works because of its large scale symphonic finish. Sibelius had been fascinated by the world of Shakespeare's works since 1901, when a friend suggested that he compose music for "The Tempest," but when he was asked to compose the piece again in 1925, he let his imagination run wild. From the terrifying soundscape of the shipwreck at the beginning of the work to the ethereal songs, noisy characterizations, and startling evocations of nature, he took the themes of the mysterious world of the original work and freely created his own unique sound. Nevertheless, this work, consisting of 34 pieces in five acts (one additional piece was added later), is rarely performed in its entirety, and is now performed as a suite compiled by Sibelius himself. This disc of the complete work, conducted by the master of Scandinavian music, Okko Kamm, is performed in Danish at the theater where the work was first performed. This is a suitable piece to convey the correct image of the work.
