Description:
A great admirer of Johann Sebastian Bach, Reger wrote his first variation on a theme from Bach's works in 1904. The theme used was the duet from Cantata No. 128, "The Almighty Power of God is immeasurable," and Reger wrote "like an oboe" in the score, assuming the tone of the oboe in the original, indicating that he wanted the piece to have a variety of sounds in spite of its being a piano piece. In this album, conductor Ira Levin, who is also an arranger, has arranged the piano pieces for orchestra, rearranged the individual voices, and slightly shortened them to make the climax more powerful, in order to bring Reger's thoughts into sound. Bach's chorale "O man, of thy sins" is also arranged by Reger, and "Becklin's Four Sound Poems" is a colorful work inspired by the paintings that fascinated Reger. Naxos Japan
