Description:
Previously released on the MARCOPOLO label, this collection of works by the modern Hungarian composer Leiter (1892-1963) is now available again on the NAXOS label. Born in Budapest, studied in Leipzig, Geneva, and Paris, and developed his own style, but after World War I he devoted himself to the study of Hungarian folk music, and his works all have an interesting aspect to them. The Op. 19 suite on this album, although not indicated in the title, is taken from a ballet based on the ancient Greek writer Aristophanes' play "The Peace of Women," and is a delightful work with a satirical content that is successfully soundtracked. Other works include the tragic "In Memoriam," dedicated to the victims of World War II, and "Symphony No. 1," which is said to be a good representation of his essence. With the release of this monumental performance, one could say that a reevaluation of Leiter's music has begun. Recorded in 1996 by the Pecs Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nicolas Pasquet.
