Born in Biberach in 1752, Knehdt initially studied keyboard instruments such as the organ, as well as the violin and singing. He was active in various capacities in Weimar and Stuttgart before eventually returning to his hometown, where he spent the rest of his life as an orchestra director. He possessed remarkable talent as an organist and composed pieces on the theme of “nature,” but above all, his name endures today thanks to this “musical depiction of nature”—which could also be called a “Pastoral Symphony.” While the very existence of this piece is sometimes mentioned as an afterthought when discussing Beethoven’s “Pastoral,” there are few opportunities to actually hear it performed. This recording is intended for such fans. The titles of each movement are unmistakably reminiscent of Beethoven himself. While the “Storm” may lack a bit of its usual intensity, there’s no doubt that this work is fascinating in its own right. As for the nature of the relationship between Beethoven and Knecht… we’ll leave that to your imagination. The bonus tracks feature a collection of overtures by the contemporary composer Philidor.
