Eduard Brunner is a clarinetist of German descent born in Switzerland. He is already well known for his virtuoso performances of classical works by Mozart, Krommer, Weber, and others, but he is also eager to tackle contemporary works. He has commissioned and premiered a succession of new works from the world's most renowned composers, and has succeeded in dramatically expanding the repertoire for this instrument with his astonishing technique and expressive power. What is noteworthy is the beauty of the tones he spins out, and no matter what special technique he performs, they all have an overwhelming presence and persuasiveness, giving the listener the thrilling surprise of discovering new resonances never before heard. All of the recorded pieces have a distinctive beauty, but perhaps the most notable is "EDI" by Toshio Hosokawa. The title of the piece, "EDI," is a shortened form of Brunner's first name, which also indicates the intimacy between composer and performer.The composer's unique philosophy of putting deep meaning in the silent parts is alive and well in this piece.
