Description:
A recording of the complete flute works of J.S. Bach by world-renowned flute virtuoso and ancient music legend Barthold Kuiken and leading contemporary Japanese harpsichordist Jyunsei Watanabe! Barthold Kuiken, world-renowned flute virtuoso and legend in the world of ancient music, and Junsei Watanabe, one of the leading contemporary harpsichordists in Japan, have recorded the complete flute works of J.S. Bach. This is the first collaboration between these two old masters, who have known each other for more than 40 years since they first met. The album contains the epitome of Bach's chamber music on one disc: five flute works that have been judged to be Bach's genuine works, one unaccompanied, two obbligato harpsichord pieces, and two pieces for basso continuo. It was recorded in December 2022 at the Wakita Cordia Hall (formerly Ishihara Hall), which boasts excellent acoustics. The commentary includes a newly written manuscript by Barthold Kuiken (translated into Japanese by Takumi Kato), making it a highly readable commentary. <Barthold Kuijken (Flauto Traverso), born in 1949 in Flanders, Belgium, is a prominent leader in the world of ancient music. While studying the modern flute, he discovered an original mid-18th century Wang Kee flute, which he took as his best teacher, self-taught on 17th- and 18th-century instruments and theoretical and practical material. As a traverso (and recorder) soloist, teacher, researcher, and conductor, he has been active in the field of historical flutes and historically authentic performance for the past 40 years. His book "From Score to Music - How to Perform Baroque Music" is a skillful summary of his research, thinking and views on music. In addition to his legendary performances of the flute repertoire from Baroque to Debussy and his acclaimed recordings with his brother Sigiswald (violin) and Wieland (cello and gamba), he is Gustav Leonhardt, Robert Kohnen, Bop van Asperen, Ewald Demeyer (harpsichord), France Brugghen (recorder), Paul Dombrecht (oboe), Pete Kuijken (fortepiano), and other instrumentalists as well as baroque orchestras such as the Collegium Aureum and La Petite Bande. He is currently a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He is currently the artistic director and conductor of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra. Meanwhile, as a modern flutist, he continues to pursue his interest in avant-garde music, participating in a contemporary music ensemble based in Brussels. He has released numerous CDs on labels such as Axan, Ceon, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Sony Classical, and Naxos. His revised scores of Bach's flute works published by Breitkopf in Germany have been well received, and he has been professor of baroque flute at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels since 1976, followed by the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, from which he retired in 2014.He continues to perform and record internationally in Europe, the U.S., Korea, Japan, etc. He is also a frequent judge for competitions and lecturer for master classes, lectures, etc. In 2007, he became the first Belgian musician to receive a PhD (Doctor of Fine Arts) and in 2013 he received the NFA (Lifetime Achievement Award) in the United States.
