Born in Stockholm, Sweden, to a family of Russian descent, lyric tenor Nicolai Gedda has since enjoyed a spectacular career mainly in German-speaking countries. He is considered the heir to the orthodox bel canto style of singing, and his rare combination of impressive vocal technique and multilingual fluency has made him a rare master singer. With the exception of Bizet's "I Can Still Hear Your Voice," all of the other pieces were composed by Russian (former Soviet Union) composers or songs from the local tradition.
