[The Cathedral Made Famous by *A Dog of Flanders*: Its Little-Known Golden Age of Music] This excellent exhibition demonstrates that Antwerp, Belgium’s ancient capital—a city that has nurtured a wealth of cultural heritage—also possessed a rich tradition of polyphonic music from the late Middle Ages through the Renaissance. During the Baroque period, it also housed Rubens’ altarpiece (1611–14)—which the British author Weeda would later feature in *A Dog of Flanders* (1872)—but this album examines, from a musical perspective, how Antwerp’s cultural maturity had been built up by that point. The program begins with masterpieces of polyphony from the Dufay era and proceeds chronologically through works by composers believed to have served at the Church of Our Lady—or Antwerp Cathedral—with several pieces of Gregorian chant interspersed to illustrate the continuity of Catholic church music. The Utopia Ensemble is a vocal group comprising elite musicians who have accumulated a wealth of performance experience in Belgium, a powerhouse of early music. The all-female Gregorian chant performed by the equally experienced Psalentes serves as a musical highlight, and the structure of the album effectively highlights the development of the composers’ skillful polyphonic techniques in an accessible way.
