Hoot is often described as the first “purely American talent” to have received his musical education entirely within the United States. Although his music—with its interweaving of refined melodies and rich harmonies—possesses great appeal, it has, until now, been unjustly underperformed. This album features the world premiere recording—more than 130 years after its composition—of the Cello Concerto, which was completed slightly earlier than Dvořák’s famous work of the same name, as well as a majestic sonata, “Three Pieces” with their striking Schumann-esque piano accompaniment, “Overture,” which evokes the influence of French music; and “Scherzo,” reminiscent of American folk songs—a collection of gems that bring out the cello’s diverse expressive capabilities.
